Stepstrate is a tool that facilitates user-friendly manipulation of action histories for creative generation of customized tools.

Overview

User’s Goal:

To create customized tools by manipulating action history of the objects

Command:

Series of commands (actions) on each object

Focus:

Sequence

Eliminating the need for repetitive commands in the design process, we applied generative theory to reify the series of commands on each object into a persist instrument, Stepstrate. This allows users to directly manipulate the persistent relationships of action histories and generate the customized tools.

reification

Executing a series of commands on any object will generate an 'Action History' for that object.

polymorphism

Each action block can execute commands on multiple types of objects.

reuse

Reusing the previous command by allowing the dragging of the action block and applying it to not only original object but also to to other objects, eliminating the need to repeat the command.

Hovering over a section of the pie blocks generates a substrate illustrating the relationships among action histories, which is then moved to the Action History panel on the right side.

Each substrate can execute commands on multiple types of objects, even on other substrates.

discoverability

Hovering over any object for 2 seconds will reveal pie-shaped blocks, visually depicting the history of actions associated with that object.

appropriability

Stepstrate supports user customization, allowing the rearrangement of action blocks to create a personalized substrate.

expressivity

Stepstrate lets users easily manage action blocks, i.e. deleting them through dynamic line drawings.
